Rocky's Football Corner, 10.10.2007

(Have the New England Patriots turned into the modern-day equivalent of the Madden-era Raiders: an evil hard-hitting juggernaut steamrolling opponents; the football personification of Darth Vader? Is their coach Bill Belichick not just the mad genius in a sweatshirt, but the paranoid mad genius? Why doesn't anyone want to play running back for Coach Jon "Chucky" Gruden and the division-leading Tampa Bay Buccaneers? With quarterbacks dropping in Carolina, Arizona, Miami and Kansas City – all in one week mind you – should we just paint a target on their uniforms and be done with it? And how is it that even if Michael Vick is suspended, he still makes the news every week? Well, as usual, you won't get any answers here. Just predictions. Never mess with a sports streak. Perhaps this column will have something to say next week.)

The Patriots are evil, and they are a juggernaut, but they're also the least annoying sports dynasty in recent memory. Certainly less grating than the 90s Cowboys, the Lakers, Spurs, or (shudder) the Yankees.

Don't get me wrong, there are about a dozen teams I'd rather see win the Super Bowl than the Patriots, but I'd be fine if they do. Which they will.

Welcome back to our humble blog. I have been remiss in so many ways. I haven't been around the blog neighborhood in DC much and I've missed your clever spot.

And I'm really remiss because your blog The D.C. Universe has quite a record for picking NFL games too. I seem to recall you schooled me quite a bit last season. But I will fix my transgressions and add you to the list of bloggers calling the games for the rest of the season. Promise.

I suppose I've been focused so much on predictions that I forgot to be neighborly, and that's just wrong; perhaps a little like Coach Belichick not wanting to shake hands with his opponents.

I have to agree, of all the teams, the Patriots appear to be the best all-around team. I also agree that although they are evil, they are not annoyingly evil, as some of the examples you cite. Even though the Madden-era Raiders were also evil, they were one of the best teams to follow of their day: the hardest hitting team in football at that time.

So for some, I think the Patriots are becoming a guilty pleasure.

Don't worry about it. This season, I'm picking games using the spread, so my accuracy has dipped quite a bit. It's looking like my dream of starting my own 1-900 number for football picks will have to be put off for at least another year.
