Heck of a Job, Scooter

by Jeff Siegel

Lord knows there are countless reasons to rend garments and gnash teeth over the man that Garrison Keillor calls "The Current Occupant." But do you know what really, really makes me wail and moan? He forces me to say nice things about his predecessor.

I do not like Bill Clinton. I did not like him then and I do not like him now. He is everything that is wrong with the current American political system and the Democratic Party. He believes in Bill Clinton, and everything else he does is a means to that end. He posed as a Democrat and acted like a Republican. He did as much as the Religious Right to undermine the progressive movement in this country, all in the name of getting elected and then re-elected.

Yes, he did not invade a foreign country and get tens of thousands of people killed. But that is little consolation. If Clinton had been a better, more enlightened president, we might not have been stuck with The Current Occupant and his stupid war.

Or with the commutation of Scooter Libby’s prison sentence. This is wrong on so many levels that it seems silly to even have to mention any of them. But there it is, and not even really surprising. He didn’t fire good old Brownie*; why should he let Scooter Libby** go to jail?

Which brings us to Bill Clinton once again. After Clinton pardoned fugitive financier Marc Rich, who is apparently about as slimy as they come, the GOP-controlled Congress was aghast. Livid. And once again in an impeaching mood. They were so angry, in fact, that they held Congressional hearings to try and dig up some dirt, even though what Clinton did was completely legal and Constitutional. It was bad public policy, perhaps, but bad public policy was a Clinton specialty.

So will someone please explain to me why those same stalwarts of the right, who protect our freedoms on talk radio and FOX News, don’t see that the Rich pardon and the Libby commutation are the same thing?

*For those keeping track, that would be Mike "Brownie" Brown, head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) during Hurricane Katrina.

**For those still keeping track, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby was the Chief of Staff to Vice President Dick Cheney; Libby was convicted of obstruction of justice for lying to the FBI and to a grand jury.

(The photo of I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby is his official White House photo and is in the public domain.)
